On Wednesday, the 11th, we drove from Ukiah to San Francisco. We took Highway 1 the entire way there. There were some of the cutest little towns we passed along the way, like Bodega Bay, where we ate. Lots and lots of very winding roads but the scenery was beautiful. We stopped at Goat Rock Beach so that the kids could run and play on the beach. Little did we know that we picked one of the deadliest beaches in California. I saw the sign when I was walking in and the diagram about all the rip tides and undertows and the big trench that was right off the shore, but I thought that we could just watch the kids really close and not let them get out too far. Then a beach ranger came up to us and told us how dangerous it was and that the kids were too close. It was just too stressful to have them there knowing that it was so dangerous so we packed them up and got in the car. Sayer was mad, didn't want to leave and said, "It didn't look dangerous. It just looked like a pretty beach." Aw! An opportunity for a grand teaching moment. We told her that that was how Satan tempted us - to make things look harmless and inviting on the surface to lure us in until it's too late. We told her that the ranger was an expert and that he can see hidden dangers because he has years of experience and that she would be foolish not to listen to him. Just like her parents, teachers and leaders are experts and she needs to listen to them as well. Don't know if any of it sank in, but on a bright note, Sean already has his talk prepared for the next time he speaks in Sacrament meeting!
When we got to San Francisco that evening, we walked around Pier 39 for a while. We saw Alcatraz and the seals. It was great but cold! Out hotel in San Francisco was so nice and right next door to a Taco Bell/Pizza Hut so that was convenient!
